Hatfield (Epsilon Kappa '47)An American politician and educator from the state of Oregon, Hatfield served for 30 years as United States Senator from Oregon and also as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. A native Oregonian, he served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II after graduating from Willamette University. After the war, he earned a graduate degree from Stanford University before returning to Oregon and Willamette as a Professor.
During his tenure as a professor, Hatfield would then serve in both houses of the Oregon State Legislature. He was elected as the Secretary of State at the age of 34 and two years later as Oregon's 29th Governor, becoming the youngest person to serve in either office. He would later serve in the Oregon State Senate for 30 years, becoming the longest serving Senator from Oregon.
