Literacy for all! Omicron Chapter builds new Free Library
Omicron Chapter really wanted to make our National Service Week project big this year. We had our Service Director lead a committee and they thought a free library would be a unique idea to fit the theme of Literacy for All.
We got into contact with the City of Iowa City's Library and they actually have a program that helps people build Little Free Library's in the area. They helped us pick out a local, which ended up being a little neighborhood park. The residents of that neighborhood were thrilled and even helped us plant it! Once we bought all the materials to start the actually building, we realized it was going to require a lot more tools that we planned for! Lucky, the University Of Iowa College Of Engineering has a workshop space filled with people who wanted to help us. We worked primarily with a student worker who walked us through the steps of building the actual library. Therefore, this became a wonderful community effort!
